Extracting every last bit of freedom before ACL + Extracting every last bit of freedom before ACL + Medial Meniscus surgery Wed 3/22! Felt so good to bike 10miles to Manhattan Beach, hang with my lovely friends + ride back without knee pain. Even better to catch up with many friends over the last week. Thanks for being there for me @jillywilly @monsterismee @lizlizlizf @cau923 @sydneylosangeles @osterling2k @tommistugart @gwestvolley , Kristin + Sonia! You’re all invited to visit my hobbled + humbled a$$ during these next 3 weeks on crutches! 

Can’t wait to ✅ DONE on this dreaded procedure. Glad to have THE ATHLETE’S KNEE EXPERT Dr Bert Mandelbaum of @kerlanjobe performing my surgery. Just have to keep reminding myself, if I can conquer simultaneous bilateral hip replacements, I CAN DO ANYTHING!

CURRENT STATUS: Down, but not broken. Radically CURRENT STATUS:  Down, but not broken. 
Radically modified lower body workouts to maintain as much glute + leg muscle (+ SANITY!!!) as possible. At this point, few weeks after ski accident, I’ve regained more mobility, no crutches, but lateral stability is shot. 
ACL + Medial Meniscus Tear Surgery:  MARCH 22.

O WHITNEY, WHAT DID YOU DO?! ⛷️💥😣 THE O WHITNEY, WHAT DID YOU DO?! ⛷️💥😣 

THE STORY:  After 2 glorious days crushing it in Jackson, took a nasty fall EOD in dimly-lit uber-narrow path through woods on of all things:  a green run! Hadn’t been on there before. Turns out it was all ice. Pretty much right off lift, after entering trees I was flying with no way to slow down. There was suddenly a twisty mass of melted/refrozen turns of ice def too short for any adult skis, maybe anyone, to circumvent. 

Rolled left ski under. Fell fwd over it. Massive pop. Got my other ski off + hobbled to clear path + avoid a second collision. Stood up + encountered total knee instability. Never injured knee before, but spent enough time around athletes to know it was ACL tear, but of course ever the optimist, was hoping for better diagnosis! Could literally feel femur + tibia wanting to push right past each other when I tried to straighten leg + particularly when, after waiting forever, walked to major run + unsuccessfully tried push heel down into ski to return to base. 

Amazing! There’s a clinic at base. No broken bones. Apparently, >dozen crashes within minutes of each other, neck injuries, etc so 1. I’m lucky + 2. understandably, snow patrol couldn’t get me for an hour. X-rays + movement tests confirmed my fears. Seems full tear/rupture of ACL. Popped me in brace + super nice nurse, Heather drove me to bus stop. 

Coming home a day early. Try to call @kerlanjobe for appt + order MRI when they open Monday morning. Wonder if I’ll get a frequent customer discount? Do they have a punch card? 😂 

Yes, humor is my escape. I have to make myself or others laugh or I’m just gonna start crying again. 

Does it hurt? Um. Yes, but I can handle any amount of pain. I’m so so much more distraught thinking of the re: long recovery process. AND telling my mom, AKA: The Cowardly Lion who tries to talk me out of doing anything remotely physically challenging, dangerous, etc. I simply cannot listen to whatever will spill from her volcano of incessant global peril. 

UGH. I’m so mad at myself.
